Able Cafe The Podcast is a revolutionary, first-of-its-kind, creative, cultural, and informational platform.  This Los Angeles-based podcast has been conceived and conceptualized by creative artists with disabilities, for individuals with disabilities.  Together with a wide range of educational, informational and creative content, soon to be found on our developing website, www.ablecafe.net, and our upcoming Youtube page, Able Cafe.

The podcast seeks to accomplish the following:
Demolishing outdated stereotypes.  Rejecting limitations, focusing only on ABILITIES.  Building bridges of understanding and multicultural connections.  Providing a safe, nurturing creative space for those who are different to create, communicate, and discover their voice.  Opening doors of opportunity, working toward employment, creative enrichment, and empowerment.  Celebrating the lives, hopes, dreams, creativity, and personal stories of diverse communities.   Able Cafe The Podcast seeks to blend the worlds of adaptive sports, disabled veterans, art, fashion, music, pop culture, and creative thinking into a revolutionary entertaining, collaborative movement.

About Our Founder

Originally from Boston, Able Cafe founder and president, Michael C. Cooney is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts/Amherst.  He received his Master of Fine Arts from Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles.  His first book, Walking In My Sleep, is a memoir about growing up with a disability.  Michael is a trailblazer.  In the 1980s, he was one of the first physically disabled kids to be placed in a mainstream classroom.  Michael C. Cooney has written four films (A Place To Call Home, Zombie High, Santa Is Real, and Accidents) as well as producing and directing countless other projects.  Prior to becoming a writer/filmmaker,  Cooney spent a decade working in all aspects of the music industry.

Michael has said,“My work blends the concepts of music and rhythm with the visual medium and the power of the written word.”  Michael C. Cooney was the Disability Cinema Coalition’s 2013 “Gateway Award” recipient.  In 2010, Michael traveled to South Korea to speak on disability issues.

Today he continues to speak about music, writing, film, and equality around the world.
